Swordsmen: Where did they go?

As anyone who has played the computer game dark omen will tell you, Mercenary swordsmen are invaluable...so where have they gone? I miss them....pike men are more powerful, tis true, but I find that a big unit of mercenary swordsmen to be both characterful and reasonably effective.

It seems the mercs in Dark Omen were essentially freelance Empire.
