A lot of the new armies lately are coming up with new monsters with no model. GW's reasoning is that they dont want a lack of model to hold back cool ideas. Now. Im not bothered about GW's money grabbing or pricing etc but I do think this is actually quite a clever way of making money. If they released these big monsters, they would have to pay a lot designing it and making it. Then they would be able to sell it for £25-35. As they are now, if you want to use the models in GW stores or Tournies. You have to convert it from existing GW models. I think in the vast majority of cases we end up paying WAY more for these converted models than we would for a ready done monster, especially with no bits orders anymore. So the Abomination for Skaven, we need something with wheels on. So a corpse cart or chariot; £15 We then need a box of Rat Ogres; £15 at least. Then we either need the body of an existing big monster [Dragon perhaps] or loads of greenstuff. So at best we will be getting it for about £35 in GW pockets but without GW having to fork out on the design and creation process. Pretty clever I reckon

That's actually a really interesting way of looking at it Veq. Could the same reasoning be used for smaller kits that GW doesn't release? (can't think of any specific kits, but I know they exist.)

Another side of this is to promote a sort of elitism. Most 'newbs' will look through the model range, not find a model, and never use it. A lot of random characters and monsters go without models, and therefore you rarely see them used except for by the older players who end up converting them.
Wishful thinking would say it means GW still cares for the hobby.
