I recently started going to a gaming store near where I live, and I decided to start a new army to bring to it my choice was the Empire, and this will follow the wizard Gerhardt Schilder and his men across their journeys.
Game 1
Opponent: Warriors of Chaos
500 Point Game
My list:
Gerhardt Schilder (Battle Wizard)
Level 2 Wizard
Grey Wand
20 Halbrediers
10 Crossbowmen
[5 Swordsmen]
15 Archers
Scout special rule
His List:
Exalted Hero
Chaos Runesword
Shield
10 Warriors (unit 1)
Shields
10 Warriors (unit 2)
Additional Hand weapons
Champion
Gerhardt surveyed the small Chaos warband. Although he resented having to command Emperial forces in these meaningless battles, he dare not disobey an order from the Reiksmarshel himself, Kurt Helborg. He deployed his crossbowmen, swordsmen, and halbrediers in a battle line, but told his Archers to scout ahead, and delay the Chaos forces. A breeze swept across the battlefield as he called upon the Winds of Chamon, and he strode down to join his men.
Pregame Thoughts: For a veteran player at this store, I must say that I was disappointed with his army selection. Cramming nothing but Chaos armored soldiers and spending so many points on his Hero's sword left me questioning his skill. Hopefully this would be an easy win for me, as the Archers and Crossbowmen could annoy his men, while the wizard did the real damage with the Lore of Metal.
Deployment: He deployed his two units side by side, and he put his Hero with unit 1. I put my Crossbowmen on the back table edge, with the detachment of swordsmen on their left flank, and the Halbrediers on their right. Gerhardt joined the Crossbowmen. The archers were set up in front of my Halbrediers , so as to not block the crossbowmen's line of sight. He won first turn.
Turn 1: He moved both squads straight forward. This was fine by me as it brought them within range of my mage's spells. I didn't move anything. My wizard rolled Commandment of Brass and Spirit of the Forge. He used the latter of the two spells with his first three power dice, rolling Irresistible force. It inflicted ten hits on unit 1, which knocked 7 warriors out of the game. He passed the panic test. My archers opened fire on unit 1, and the volley of arrows took out another warrior. My crossbows failed to do anything to unit 2.
Turn 2: Again, he moved both of his squads straight forward, bringing them within 1/2 range of both my shooting squads. I moved my halbrediers next to my archers, so that they could be charged by both chaos units, but only the front could be charged. My wizard again cast Spirit of the Forge, and killed 7 warriors from unit 2. The archers killed another unit 1 warrior, leaving only one warrior to guard the exalted hero. The crossbows shot down a warrior from unit 2.
Turn 3: As expected, both of his units charged my Halbrediers, who stood their ground. However, they didn't do nearly as well as expected, the only casualties coming from the Hero, who took down three of my men. My two remaining soldiers killed the a warrior from unit 2, leaving only the champion. I won the combat by one, but he held his ground. On my turn, I charged the side of unit 2 with my swordsmen, and the Exalted Hero with my Archers. The swordsmen finished off the champion, and the bowmen took down the remaining warrior from unit 1, leaving only the Exalted Hero left on the field for him. Said hero took out another three Halbrediers, but they wounded him once in response. He fled, but was caught and killed.
Result: Massacre for me.
Postgame thoughts: Wow. I only took 6 casualties, and I wiped out his army by the end of Turn 3. I was really pleased with my wizard, the Lore of Metal is devestating against Chaos Warriors. The archers did their jobs, but I wasn't pleased with the crossbowmen, who only killed one warrior the whole game. He had some bad rolls, but mainly his army selection lost him the game before Turn 1 had even started. Even so, my I think I'm going to enjoy using this army. The next battle is 750 points, so I'm thinking about either adding some knights, or putting in a hellblaster and some pistoliers.
Gerhardt kneeled before Kurt Helborg.
"I wiped out the entire warband, my lord. They won't trouble you anymore."
"I am glad, wizard. I will make sure that before you march into battle again, you are better equipped and better trained. Is there anything else I can do for you?" Helborg asked.
"No sir. Well, one thing, troubles me. How is it that the Heroes of Chaos are bestowed gifts by their gods? Do not the gods of the Empire care about us enough to grant us gifts?"
The only reply the Grand Master of the Reiksguard would give him was, "When you no longer desire that knowledge, it shall be made clear to you."
