Hero hammer is something we've all probably tried more than once, but for the sake of simplifying it, lets build some ground rules. So far I have 3 general scenarios; Battle Royale, Magic Royale, and The Pit.
Battle Royale is for 2+ players, and is played on a normal board. Each hero must be at least 12" apart, preferably 24". They may have absolutely any equipment they want, though are generally <500. This often means no dragons, but unlimited battles, though frowned upon, may be done. Special characters and casters are also frowned upon. Terrain is viable in this game type, though it should cover no more than 20% of the field. Lords that can make new units, IE vampires are allowed. are zombies really going to annoy a lord that much? And even so, that makes the vampire player almost more of a pariah than that demon player, so just think of it as a target being painted on his back, and a reason to work together with your enemies before turning on them...
Magic Royale is exactly as it seems. The same set up as a battle royale, but with magic users.
The pit: This is my favorite scenario. Lords/heroes are placed exactly 10" from one center point. The 'board edge' is directly behind each hero, so approximately 12" from the central point. This is generally for 2 players, but if you wish to use more, set up your lords and equal number of degrees from the center when drawing the 10" line, IE 120 degrees for 3, 90 for 4, 72 for 5, and so on so forth. Small amounts of terrain are viable in this as well, though they should cover no more than 10% of the 'board.' Mounts should be agreed upon before the battle, wether there should be none, no flyers, or anything goes.
