Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you will undoubtedly have noticed your local lizardmen players wandering about as if in a daze, muttering about such mysterious things as "nerfed salamanders", "five stegadons(!)" and "changes". You suddenly come to the conclusion that the benevolent Games Workshop has gifted its cold blooded players with a new army book. In an attempt to either discover what to look out for from your opponents, or alternatively to see what lethal new combos and units you can put into practice, you come here looking for a unit by unit breakdown of the new book, the kind written by some far off gamer with too much time on his hands. These articles are both helpful and an interesting read and you look forward to seeing another persons take on the new lizardmen. This is not one of those articles.
Now, until the new army book, I never gave temple guard that much notice because 1) the metal models weren't that great and 2) I never intended to get a slann and thus had no need for them. But I diligently flicked through their new rules regardless and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Besides the infinitely better plastic models, the new temple guard can be used without a slann mage priest, they are slightly cheaper and come with some extra equipment. They hit harder than ordinary saurus because of halberds and a higher WS, or alternately they can absorb loads of punishment with a combination of their scaly skin save, light amour and shield. On the down side, they need to be used with a slann to benefit from their Sacred Duty special rule.
So I'll leave it open to discussion. In your opinion, for what you get, are temple guard worth taking without a slann?
