The title basically says it all: Is it fair, cheezy or just down right stupid to run a steg in a 1000 point 'beginners' tournament? ie, one for lazy gamers, like me who haven't entered a tourney before as well as actual newbie players.

I wouldnt say it is beardy, you will see Varghulfs and the like. Plus, they will let you down against some armies, against Dwarfs and Empire with Cannons, your Steg will just lose you points.
It really comes into its own against Daemons and Undead, and they are powerful anyway.
So go ahead and take one, I think as its a tourny, you are best taking one with the Engine of the Gods with a Priest on.

True, I didn't really think that other gamers wouldn't be gifted with my agelic conscience of making the least cheezy list ever. I'm probably only gonna run a normal steg cause I don't have the points free for an Engine of the Gods. In fact, I'll post the list up now. It still needs a bit of work though. HEROES Scar Veteran: great weapon, shield, Hide of the Cold Ones. 144 points. HEROES Skink shaman. 65 points. CORE 15 saurus: musician, standard bearer, champion. 195 points. CORE 14 skinks, kroxigor. 125 points. CORE 10 skink skirmishers. 70 points. SPECIAL 3 terradons. 90 points. SPACIAL Stegadon. 235 points. RARE 1 salamander. 75 points. TOTAL: 999 points. A lot of the list is made up of combo's I use in larger games and have just copied and pasted for this list. Hopefully they'll work just as well in a smaller game.

Engine with a Lvl2 on it is a vastly better option that a Priest and a normal Steg IMO.
Extra shooting, extra magic, extra strength, extra armour.
All you would need to drop are either those Terradons, although I wouldnt do that. Or those Skirmishers and 1 Sauros [to make a unit of 15 with the Scar Vet] plus the Scar Vets shield [he will rarely use it anyway].
Your list is fine as it is though really, I just think the Engine is a better option.

Hmm, y'know it's probably worth me getting an engine of the gods some time in the future. *adds to the already obscenely long To Buy list*
i've seen a lot of players do this but I can't see the point it it. Sure it makes your ranks look neater, but if you want to move the character out of the unit, what happens then? You loose one of your ranks.
