The true Children of Chaos: BEASTMEN
A how to on how to fight the armies of the old world with the true children of chaos....
Well I've been playing beastmen long enough I think to start a this list, and hopefully it'll be good enough to help other true beast players in fighting the many other armies out there. We might not have a top tier army, but by all that is chaos our army book can do more than hold its own against any army if played right! Now, onto the goodie bits, what this article is really about....
Brettonians
Probably one of the hardest armies to fight with beastmen, these armoured horsemen of the old world will do some heavy damage to your units. This army happens to be the army of choice by my most regular opponent, so I've had good experience fighting them. When fighting the smooth skinned Brettonians, do not, I repeat, DO NOT go for the horde tactic. Large beast herds will do nothing against a good charge from knights of the realm. We don't even get the standard +5 combat rez like most rank n file so we're already at a disadvantadge, plus the low strength of the units and low LD will pretty much guarantee a lost herd. Now what I have had do good against them is monsters and magic. If the brettonian player is going to pray, then good for you. Gives you more time get magic off and get your monsters in position. Try to use Minotaurs, Dragon ogres, and chariots a lot. Dont use Shaggoths unless you want to have them as support, as one charge against it will most likely find it dieying or losing combat. Also fear. Fear will be your friend against bretts, if you have a little bit of luck when he tries to charge your fear causing units he'll fail and be set up for some good charges. Minotaurs I would run with MoN for the save, Chariots I would run with MoK for the extra power to take down the low number knights. Impact hits will be your friend here. Dragon ogres and giants will be a life savior. Great weapons of course you will have to use, and with the high movement you'll find them being very maneuverable. Also if anything, giants will be good for bait. the Terror caused by them have done its fair share of running knights off the board, and if he tried to target the giant with pegasi or anything, he'll have to roll for fear. if he makes it well good for him, l eaves your other high strength units alone for now. A few beast herds will be good to use to get up on the flanks, counter charge units, or even just bait in units. If you wanted to you could get a cheap wargor with no marks and a great weapon, a banner-less herd and try to lure some knights in. The idea of killing off a character could be just enough to get the knights to charge, and then set up with dragon ogres or even wolves for a side charge to hold them there. If you dont really want to do the whole giant monster tactic, Tzeentch magic or nurgle magic is a great way to kill of knights. Get enough characters and try to get some good magic missile spells. You could mix Lore of death with Lore of Tzeentch, as both chosen spells are magic missiles. get a herd and stick a caster or two in there as protection from missile fire, and cast away. Try to sit in some terrain features, and have just the shaman within LoS to cast spells. Use the terrain to your advantadge and try to out cast the opponent! One last tactic that could surprise a unit of knights with a second turn charge from behind. Get a large herd, I'd use maybe 10 gor w/ 2 ccw, 10 ungor with spears, with a FC. ATLEAST have 20 to outnumber them. throw a lvl 1 shaman in the unit, give him the staff of darkoth and a power stone, and try to ambush right behind some knights. IF you havent done this before, the knight player will be in for a surprise! Ambush behind some knights, do your normal casting. ( make sure to have a few other casters to soak up dispel scrolls and dice before hand) and then cast the staff of darkoth last for a rear charge from the enemy deployment zone! It is sort of a long shot but if its pulled off, its a great feeling. Then you have a skirmishing unit behind all these juicy armoured targets...
Soon to come.... Tomb kings
