You can make quite a broad range or armies with chaos.
You can make a horde army with lots of maraurders and beast units.
I personally go for elite infantry in the form of chaos wariors with a mark.
You can make fast hard hitting armies with chariots and cavalry.
Then theres armies made mostly of large creatures such as trolls, ogres, giants, minatours etc.
Lastly there are the deamon armies , i'mnot a fan of this type of army as i think instability is to severe, also for their points cost i dont think they are good enough in combat.

Warriors have a lot of scope to be very intricate, ogreking(from this site) has painted his tzeentch warriors with lighning all over them.
But they can also be quite simple, mine are black with drybushed silver to pick out the details and then ive just done some bits in other colours to make units stand out from each other.

the chaos warrior i have are done in a light green and then inked green then picked out in silver, and the mutations done in a fleshy colour, i think that this works well for nurgle warriors.

As Veq said, theres a lot of differet ways to field chaos, and all of them react differently, perhaps the best tactic for warriors of chaos is the meat shield one, where you have elite warrior trailing a bit behind some cheap units, like marauders, they can be charged at all from the front, and when from the side, the meatshields flank charge them, the same goes if the meatshields are charge. The only side that is realy open is the rear, but getting round 2 squads of infantry would be quite hard, as they would be charged before they got there, and more likely then not in the flank, for really elite units, like a precious 10 knight squad with a 500 point chaos lord in the squad, it may be a good idea to surround the whole squad with cheap fast units for 360 degree protection, but this comes at a large price and is far too expensive for use in smaller games.
Another tactic is to spend as few points as possible on infatry, and get as many cavalry as you can, and go for a full out charge against the enemy.
Whichever tactic you use, whether one of mine, your own, or someone elses, bear in mind that chaos has more powerful, and more elite troops then any other army, including high elves (IMO), and they excel in combat, having only one true ranged weapon, although it is the most powerful in the game, the hellcannon. They also can field a lot of sorcerers, which substitutes the ranged weaponry other armies have.
Hope this has filled at least some of the how do armies do in battle question.

Erm... not to seem like an not a very nice person, but I think after 3 and a half years, the OP has probably figured out how Chaos armies fare in battle. Either that, or he's not playing anymore.
Generally a good idea is to check the date of the last post. If it's more than a couple months old at this point, I wouldn't reply to it due to its being dead.
Again, not to seem mean, just to point that out.
