The wood elves, or Asrai as they call themselves are the remnants of the high elves that moved to the old world long ago. When the High Elves left during the War of the Beard, the Wood Elves stayed to protect and ancient and powerful forest; Athel Loren. Athel Loren is alive with the power of two of the wood elves main gods, Kurnous, lord of the hunt, and Isha, the mother godess. These two gods are "Represented" by the king and queen of Athel Loren, Orion and Ariel.
The wood elves army is a conglomerate of 2 factions, the elves and the spirits.
The wood elves themselves are excelent archers and powerful warriors, including various types. The glade guard and riders, whose powerful bows are likely the best bows in the game. Wardancers are worshippers of the third wood elf god, Loec. They are the story tellers of the Asrai, using their acrobatic skills to make amazing shows and bring death to the enemies of the forest. Eternal Guard are the guardians of the forest in the winter, when it cannot protect itself. The Wild Riders of Kurous are the feared companions of the Hunt lord, Orion. Last of the troops are the Waywatchers, the great scouts of the wood elves with bows that are even more powerful than those of the glade guard.
The other half of the army are the tree spirits, seperated into dryads, treekin, and treemen. Dryads are faintly disturbing in that they are shapeshifters. They appear as children or beautiful elven maids, then once they have lured their prey into their grasp they transform into scary tree women that rip their enemies apart with razor sharp talons. There are 3 types of Dryads; the regular dryads, branch nymphs, who are older dryads that lead units, and branch wraiths are magic users, and some of the only beings that can lead the treespirits.
The other creatures that can lead them are the massive Treemen. They are the product of a powerful spirit binding with a living tree, generally the more benevolent of the tree creatures, as opposed to the treekin, evil twisted spirits who bind with dead trees to make powerful creatures that only want to kill.
The Asrai have extremely close ties with Brettonia, and their nemesi are Beastmen, Morghur in particular. They will often align themselves with Brettonians and High Elves (as well as ogres, but they're mercs, so do they really count?) and will occaisionally align with the Empire, Dwarves, Tomb Kings, and Lizardmen. They are enemies with Orcs, Skaven, Dark Elves, Chaos, and Vampire Counts.
