I was told way back when, that a spearhead box will give you about 1000 points, but you'd have to buy a commander as well. So for around $105 you'd be set. But I just figured out a possible army for my son and got something surprising. Is this viable? Contents of Spear Head: 24 Saurus Warriors 24 Skink 8 Saurus Cav with Cold Ones $90
This is the Army.
Hero - Scar Veteran Cold One Blessing of Itzl Blessing of Tep-ok Light Armor Maiming Shield Bane Head 180 pts (converted from saurus cav)
Hero - Skink Priest Level 2 Mage Scout Mark of Old Ones Scared Steg Helm 185 pts (converted skink)
Core - 12 Saurus Warriors full command 174 pts
Core - 12 Saurus Warriors full command 174 pts
Core - 12 Skink, Brave, Scout 89
Core - 11 Skink, Brave, Scout 82
Special - 7 Saures Cav w/ full command Jaguar Standard 320
Total: 1204
Then add in Lord Kroak and Kroq-Gar for a grand total of 3000 points. All for $170! I'd have 2 lord, 4 hero, 4 core, 1 special and 1 rare.
Is this legit? We're thinking about this for Christmas...

I think the thing with the Lizardmen box is just that you dont really save much money with it.
That list seems ok to me though, but I would lose the Steg Helm. Its just not worth it, with his Mark of the Old Ones. Get the Cube of Darkness. With his Re-Rolls for his Mark, it will almost always work and can be a game winner.
Drop the Cav down to 5 [6inc Hero]. This will save you some points. If you made the Skink Priest totally defensive in nature [Diadem on a Lvl1 Priest] then you would have more points and could get a Scar vet with Charm of the Jaguar Warrior. Light Armour, Shield + Great Weapon. He is a fantastic and versatile hunter.
I would advise against Kroak + Kroq Gar to take the army to 3000 though. It wont be very balanced. Probably better going for a lower points total and a bigger variety of troops. Perhaps a Normal Slaan, 3 Terradon +2 Salamanders? Something like that.
Lizardmen are getting a new army book in a few months though. So at least if you do get what you have planned [as most of those models wont really be changing, the only possiblity is the Cold Ones in the Cav box] then there wont be new models replacing them soon. Just stay away from buying any Kroxigor, Temple Guard/Stegadons as they are all getting new models.

Well, I always though Lord Kroak was far too cheesey and overpowered. But it's not quite true. There are several ways to take him out with ease, and at his cost, that is really bad. You pretty much ride your army on the hopes that he kills everything, which isn't quite viable.
Not to mention last night I killed him twice on the first turn with Dark Elves. (My first times playing with them as well.)

I fround out about the book, but we're gonna go with them anyways cause it was his choice. I'm going to have to print up that advice so i can look at it later when i'm not about 6 minutes from passing out. Thanks guys!
