Well... JD and I were discussing putting a Treeman into a unit of Treekin, and some questions came up. Quoting the rule book "A character may not join a monster," but what if the character is a monster? What if it's a doombull, is that a monster? What is actually a monster anyway, are minotaurs, trolls, treekin, ogres, etc. monsters? and they are not "a" monster. I guess the real questions are: -What constitutes a monster? -Could a monster lord (great unclean ones/treeman) join units? -Could a character join a unit of things like trolls (as happened in the White Dwarf vs Black Gobbo battle?)

Monsters cant join units even if they are characters too as far as I am aware.
Doombulls are not Monsters and so can join units.
Normal characters canjoin units such as Trolls etc.

a monster is anything that is stand alone like a giant or giant eagle or hydra, or a monster mount like a dragon or something.

They are None Flying Monsterous Mounts and so can join units anyway.

A monster is anything mounted on a 50mm base, if I have my rules correct. Yes, they can join units, as Dragon Ogre Shaggoths can join units, and the old Greater Daemons could as well.
Satisfied?
