Hireling Corsairs of the Pirate Principality

[Kaffl]

This army is more for Fluff and for show than for winning, although I'd still like to stand some chance (I have a reputation to uphold!). The idea is that the army is from the Pirate Principality. Hence, the Duellists with Pistols. Also, I thought it fluffy to have Long Drong's Slayer Pirates (they're pirates, dammit!) and Mengil Manhide's Manflayers (They're a valuable addition to a plunderful army, so long as they don't eat the crew of the ship ). Plus, I just really wanted some Delfs in there, even if they're not the new Delfs. So, without further ado - the Hireling Corsairs of the Pirate Principality.

This isn't exactly what I expected. I thought I'd have something more... Hordie. I was under the impression that the number of models I'd be fielding would be on par with the Empire, though in truth with no Regiments of Renown I probably could have. In particular Mengil Manhide's Manflayers were ridiculously expensive. I like the amount of shooting, but I have no real solid Close Combat units. I have both units of Dwarfs (the Slayer Pirates and their slightly more sane brethren) who can hold their own, the the Manflayers will likely work well as part of a combined charge, but I can't see them working too well on their own.

Should I drop the pistols off the Duellists you think? They're really expensive, they almost double the cost per model. I'd love to put Pikemen in their also, but they aren't "Piratey". Can anyone think of a good reason why Pirates would use anything akin to Pikemen?

I have it! They use sharpened Oars to row them boats, which in battle can be used as Pikes! Therefore everyone on the ship has a role in the battle! Was that a bad enough reason to work? And no, I'm not going to use it because I don't want to convert Pikes that way.

As I said in the other thread, swap those normal Dwarfs for Maneaters with Braces of Handguns. I wouldn't drop the pistols as it ruins the theme, you can save some points by giving a unit or two belaying pins [throwing knives] though.

I wouldn't know how to model the belaying pins though. They're tiny, and I can't sculpt worth nuts. That's all I'm thinking of at the moment. Also, what exactly do Throwing Knives do? And Morning Stars please. I don't know what any of them do, I never have to play against them so I don't know.

Is this list going to work at all though? It has a lot of not much in it. It has the Duellists which will really be more of an annoyance than anything, and it's got what, 2 units that get rank bonus? And a rank bonus of 1 at that. Does it have anything that can really do damage?

Also - with the pistols, do I get an extra attack for having a pistol and a hand weapon? I seem to remember reading that somewhere once, though I forget where, and I could be wrong.

With Maneaters rather than those Normal Dwarfs you will have 2 pretty much unbreakable units [so long as you keep the paymaster near or with the Maneaters], from which your harassment units or hammers can support. You have lots ofannoying units like Duellists that can cause damage at range with their pistols and the Manflayers to rack up loads of points against small weak enemy units.

Its not a power list but it can work if you play it well.

So I drop the Duellist Champion and Dwarfs and add 3 Maneaters with Braces of Pistols. My points total is now 2003, which is just about perfect. Nobody will complain about being 3 points over. That definitely adds a lot of punch to the list and really makes it playable. Great suggestion there - I didn't know I could do that until I read the Ogre book. Funny that Ogres take them as Rare choices and I get them for a Special choice
