The Geistenmund Hills are home to ancient barrows where long-forgotten people were purportedly laid to rest. Centuries ago, Necromancers exiled from Brettonia settled in the region and used their magics to raise the dead from the barrows. Eventually the lords of the Border Princes enlisted the aid of the local Dwarfs to seal the barrows with powerful runes, wards and stone arches. These protections have grown old however, and occasionaly, someone will destroy the runes to free the restless dead.

"Tell me again why we are going through these hills?"
I groaned, we both knew this was a bad idea now but he had no need to harp on about it.
"We're here because I ignored your claims that the dead sometimes wander around looking to kill people."
"And as a result we are now running for our lives because a bunch of undead knights want their gold wristbands back." I added to forestall any further comments "now shut up and run"
The sound of galloping hooves was getting closer again. We gave them the slip last time but they won't be fooled by the old 'through the legs' routine again, although it was funny watcing them try to reverse direction to catch the band I threw past them, unfortunately broken bones didn't stop them.
"I'm thinking we should dump this stuff." said Halrad "It slows us down and they really want it back."
"OK OK, we'll dump it, there's a pit over there, we'll chuck them in nd run for it again."
When the splintering and claging sounds had died away, we returned to the side of the pit. I grinned.
"It'll take them a while to get up from that at least." I commented.
Before Halrad could reply, we heard aother set of galloping hooves, we both drew our pistols, instinctively moving into a back to back position, covering every angle.
Suddenly it loomed out of the murk, a massive horse, living, and bearing a knight. His heavy armour bore the mark of a unicorn and some kind of flower and in his hands he held the biggest blade I have ever seen a human hold.
"What are you scoundrels doing here?" he roared, d**n lordly bugger, well this isn't a palace so he'll have to learn some manners.
"Leaving" I replied sharply "We're headed for Aldium."
"Indeed? I cannot help you in that, I have only just set out from Malko to investigate rumours of the abominable undead."
"Well there's a few just down there." I pointed to the pit. "In the meantime, we're going"
Fortunately he has a thicker skin than I thought, and replies courteously enough.
"Fair thee well then good sir." Halrad called as we started walking away.

The brave knight charged into the mist smashing a skeleton to pieces with a lance splintering strike.
All around him he could hear moaning and cackles, just out of the knights vision, in the mists. The ghouls lurked.
One sprung stabbing the horse in the face with a serrated leg bone, the noble beast fell trapping the gallant knight beneath it.
The knight struggled to free him self but the effort was in vain and his sword was out of reach.
The ghouls closed in.

The two bandits heard the scream from a distance.
They laughed.
The brave didn't last long in Geistenmund Hills.

Faintly the knight hears a "Hrump" behind him.
Footsteps pound the earth of the small hill behind the knight and his fallen horse. Hopefully he looks up the hill between the ghouls legs, to see a fully armored dwarf charging down the hill. With his Hammer raise high, rushing towards the ghouls that are preparing to pounce on him.
Renewed, the knight once again starts to struggle for his sword when he hears a loud curse and a clanging of armor!
Staring up the hill in horror he is treated to the sight of the dwarf doing his best imitation of a boulder!
Bowling into the ghouls with tremendous force, knocking them in all directions, the dwarf ends his "Courageous Boulder" maneuver sprawled next to the knight. Shaking his head, the dwarf gains his feet and heaves the horses' corpse off the knight. Stooping to pick up, and hand the fallen warrior his sword, he thunders...
"Might be needin this boy. Quit loungin around and lets go have some fun!"

As the warrior pair rose to their feet, something stalked the shadows. Ethaot, the lost Wood Elf, searching for his identity, had been ambushed by ghouls before he'd even caught sight of the Knight or the Dwarf. In this moment it seemed that the addage 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend', and Ethaot found it necessary to make himself known. Besides, the young Elf (young as far as Elves go anyway, just a bit over a century old!) was growing lonely, and companionship would not be such a bad thing. Although Ethaot had no love for Dwarfs when he knew his heritage, he felt no such hatred now in his state of amnesia.
Nocking an arrow, Ethaot loosed on one of the vile cannibals closing on the warriors. The shot strayed slightly from its intended target - it punctured the sub-human's right eye as opposed to a clean shot in between. With no more than a momentary glance back, the Human was certain that, for the moment, he'd gained a new ally. However, the Dwarf had not been unaware of the Wild Hunt that had taken place this midsummer. He knew many of the Dwarfs slain, and was wary of any Elfs, particularly those lightly-armoured and with bows.

Deciding that, for the moment more pressing matters were at hand, the dwarf scowled at the elf then proceed to pulverize a ghouls chest.
With a sudden change in tactics, Azure decided that all of these ghouls were entirely too tall for their own good! One fell sweep of his hammer and 4 ghouls had to figure out how to kill the party with their knees and legs somewhere over the next hill.
"Well met elf!" taunted Azure, "Are you just going to stand back there looking pretty out of harms way, or are you going to get in here and messy like a real warrior?!"
Laughingly Azure kicked a spare ghoul head, still trying to snap at his toes, in the direction of the Elf. Unfortunatly for Azure, the ghoul chose at that moment to snap and latched onto Azures' boot! Cursing the Gods of Irony, Azure swung his hammer at the head on his foot.
"Not my finest moment" Azure thought, just before the hammer crashed into his big toe with astonishing force!

Krinocks hunched and twisted form lurked just out of sight of the would be adventurers. His rank cloak pulled tight to his malformed body, a token gesture to ward off winters cruel bite as beings with his power did not feel the cold as mere mortals. It was simply a memory of the plight of his youth.
His toothless bleeding gums mouthed a silent command as he called off the attack and the Ghouls slunk back to their dens. He had work to do and did not want these foolish glory hunters hanging around.
He would repay his debt to Alduim, for forcing him in to the wild before his 3rd year, too ashamed were they to look upon his mutated body. He had lived on worms and dead animals, polluting his body further untill they had found him. The Ghouls of Geistenmund Hills. They had took him in as one of their own, but he was not one of them, he was more than that, his intelligence was not stunted as theirs, he had already learnt to read before he was cast from the town and here in the dens of the Ghoul Packs he had found all manner of foul texts, no doubt works of weak necromancers who had saught to control these feral beasts and failed.
With each year his power had grown as he studied and the Ghouls forgive him his odd ways, they had taken him in as one of their own and they would not abandon him. They were immensly loyal in their own way.
His plans were coming to fruitation and the entire Border Princes would feel his wrath in the coming months.

Glad, but confused the monsters were placing a retreat, Azure administered first-toe-aid to his throbbing appendage. Looking to the knight he questions " What kinda fool tries to take on that many dead thingies alone?" His gruff voice holds just a touch of humor for the knight.
