The Kingdom of Evadia has undergone many periods of strife. Indeed, war is a natural way of life for these people, and one they excell at.
However, it was not always so. Only through years of termoil, and generations of conflict, did Evadia become the warrior-people they are today. The ages of Evadia are summarised herein:
The Founding:
Of this, much has been told. No accurate version exists, and every Evadian seems to have their own account. Suffice to say that Evadia was home to semi-nomadic peoples, constantly fleeing from larger, more brutal Orc armies. The coming of Alyx united the major rulers of Evadia, and from this alliance was born the kingdom.
The Wars of Expansion:
United, and filled with fire, the armies of Evadia marched in all directions. They moved south to Vulcania, East to Sandsobar, North to Irongate, and West into the Empire and Boarder Princes. It seemed that nothing could stop the Evadian armies, and their enemies fell wherever they marched. The Empire feared that this rising Kingdom would overshadow them, and they would lose their lands. The Empire prepared for war.
The Retreat:
The coming of Mannfred Von Carlstein marked the end of the War of Expansion. His armies did terrible damage to the Empire, but the loss suffered by Evadia through his Lieutenants was far worse. Even after Mannfred's defeat, Evadia continued to wage war against the Undead, calling its armies from more distant regions to aid in the conflict.
By the time Evadia had defeated the undead, many of its lands were lost. Sandsobar and Vulcania became plagued regions, their roads watched constantly by bandits and raiders. The Boarder Princes were lost, as was all the northern regions beyond the Essen. Evadia needed time to recover, but fate would not give that time.
The War of Chaos:
The Dark Gods launched assaults upon Evadia. Great champions leading vast armies poured into the land, eager to conquer in the name of their patrons. The war machines of the Chaos Dwarves laid siege to the cities, whilst Skaven fought shadow-wars in the underground.
It was the coming of Alexander Piayx Valentine, recently crowned King of Arms, that turned the tide. As the Chaos champion marched on the captial, Alexander rode out upon Brearc, the Royal Dragon, and faced the warrior in single combat. Despite suffering terrible wounds, Alexander slew the foe, and led the counter-attack that broke his army. Only then, when the forces of Chaos had fled, did he allow himself to die. In honour of his actions, the capital of Evad was renamed "Alexhiem".
This war marked two of the great changes of Evad. The first was the hatred of Magic, for many saw the powers that Chaos wielded, and realised that all sorcerors carry such power. The second was the birth of Alyx as a true diety. Alexander often said that Alyx was watching over him, guiding him, and after his death many accepted his beliefs.
The Sanctions of the Empire:
Unwilling to let Evadia repeat their expansionist phase, the Empire was swift and uncompromising in their action. They demanded that Evadia reduce its armies, or face military action against them.
The current ruler was Tobias Tecys Mercury, a man who did not suffer fools, but nor was he foolish himself. At the amazement of all, the told the Empire that the Evadians would comply, and reduce their armies.
Thus, the Knight Orders became the "Official" forces of Evad. The Empire conceeded that in times of war, militia may be needed, but only for so long as enemies of Evadia assailed them. Finally, Mercury spoke with many generals and captains, and told them his plan; they would become Mercenaries. However, so long as they remained in Evadia, Mercury was willing to hire them. In order to strengthen his position, Mercury called for Mercenaries form all regions, and thus grand sell-sword armies formed in Evadia. The Empire realised they had been tricked, but could not act: Evadia was well within its rights to hire Mercenaries.
These armies became known as the Free Military. When Evadia needed them, they would fight for her. When Evadia was not at war, they would travel the world, selling their skills to any they deemed worthy.
These men began their mission by pacifying the regions of Sandsobar and Vulcania, ridding them of the raiders that plagued them. After their long campaign, and a subsequent Beastmen invasion, the Free Military began to wander the Old World. This fact alone is the reason Evadian Gold Coin is a widely accepted currancy, and like Tilean gold, is considered the money of the Mercenary.
Modern Evad:
Evadia is recovering from the Storm of Chaos. Their armies fought many battles against the Chaos, especially the armies of Crom. However, massive Orc incursions that followed weakened Evadia even further, and though the Orcs were repelled and all but annihilated, the losses to the Evadians were no less severe. Most painful was the loss of Mathias Meridioc, the King of Arms, and the Royal Dragon Brearc. The new King, Valkys Gryphon, looks set to lead Evadia through the days that follow, and into a new age of light. Most impressively, thanks to the efforts of Tom Hawk, Evadia is growing strong in commerce and technology, as well as in war. Many believe that Evadia is on the verge of another great change, where black powder and cannon will replace bowstring and catapult, and Evad will become akin to the Empire.
However, such beliefs are rarely held by the Evadians themselves. Alyx guides them, Gryphon leads them, and so long as there is steel for swords, and foes to fight, the Evadians will be ready to answer the Call to Arms.
