Ok i am pretty much decided on a dark elf army seeing as i can get a head start model wise (mostly unpainted which is good too!).
Now i just need army building advice (i will learning the rules today!) with the things that i will have....i have pritned out loads of stuff from the GW website to help me as well....
i would have -1 unit of spearmen -1 unit of crossbow men -1 coldone chariot -1 beastmaster on a manticore -1 mounted sorceress -1 reaver bolt thrower

Seems a nice starting force.
I would suggest that you try to get hold of some form of cavalry unit as chariots just dont hack it alone.
How do you want to play with them? an attack oriented force is more fluffy but they can also be pretty good in defence.
If going for the attacking option then i'd get a unit of corsiars they can take missile fire as they advance and are pretty impressive with the amount of attacks they can deal out.

Well first of all, how many points starting? seems a 1000 if i'm not wrong,(don't have the codex at hand) but first of all, don't take the beastmaster on the mantico, yes the manticore is a very nice model but first the beastmaster if goes on a manticore takes 2 hero slots, AAuuuch that hurts man, as well WHY DON'T HAVE DARK RIDERS? they are a must at least 1 unit (well not worthet just one) but they rock take 2 units of 5 dark riders any time you can no campion, plus 1 BS not worth, and no standard, but yes take the musisian so you can run and reagroup easy, plus you can move normally and shoot after reagrouping (fast cavalry rule) ;D.
Well let me know what points you are going after, maybe some minis you already have and see what we can work on whit. Most remember dark elf are better on the attack, they are fast and strong on the charge, defensive elfs get crushed to fast. toughness 3 man. their weakness.
