Just wondering if any of you have experience in any form of martial arts ( i know elflord does).
As i'm thinking about taking up MMA classes, although it is hard to find classes that are actually MMA and not just focussed on one aspect.
I used to do Ju-Jitsu (japanese), and go a boxing club with Skogul but stopped both.
So if i cant find an actual mixed class, your experiences with single martial arts aspects could help me to choose one.

Tae Kwon Do is a sort of mixed one....at least at the club I used to go to. You got the jackie chan style odd looking blocks, and kickboxing, and knowledge of how to break someones arm. ;D

Cool, lol.
I'd like one that would allow me to enter competition pretty easily. Plus it must include striking. So TKD is a good idea.

TKD was made from two different martial arts. Karate, and taek kyon.
and for what you want TKD is a good choice. but try to enter a TKD school that is affiliated with ITF(international taekwon do Federation) cause they're the best.

i did Shotokan Karate for about 2 or three years and i really want to go back. But i've always wanted to do a martial art where you do weapon training and i cant find one at the moment!!

lol. yeah thats the downside of TKD, no weapons. but tai chi has a lot of them. and wushu probably has the most. i like the melon hammers. they rock. as dwarvish as martial arts can get.

Yeh I think im looking for something where I can beat the hell out of somebody legally.
So sparring will be a big plus.

Try Ju Jitsu then if you can find it.

Not much striking in that, plus ive already done it.
I might just get a mat and spar with some mates, train myself.

lol, yeh it was ok I suppose. Skogul stopped going and I didnt want to just go with Paul as he was in a different part of the class anyway, thats the main reason I stopped.
I did it at Kingsway liesure centre, they still do it there to the best of my knowledge, if thats the one your mate goes then i'm not sure where else they do it but i'll have a look.
There is a totally awesome mixed martial arts school in Liverpool that does about 8 differennt forms and they mix it up each lesson. Includes boxing, ju-jitsu(japanese), muay-thai, TKD etc. Looks great, its just that its hard to get to because its in Liverpool but if your going to be driving soon it won't be too difficult for you to go. Still, Ju-Jitsu at Kingsway is probably the best bet.

no this is an old topic but i think you'ld enjoy muay thai. it's more varried than it seems if you train under the more traditional teachers (master woody, bob, sean, and nick hands are but a few, i trained w/ the latter one) it has basics that are quick to pick up, sparring, comps (demo, sparing, and in ring) it has numorous counters, locks, and parrys, along with weapon training if desired. all i say is that its hard work physically if your not used to much, but great fun ^_^ hope that helps a lil

i know a stupidly small amount of Judo and Tai chi... but the tai chi is probably because i watched a video on youtube way too much.
i'm able to throw someone almost twice my height over my shoulder due to learning Judo when i was still at primary school... the bad thing is they stopped teaching it when i was still in primary school. it was fun... i just wish i had a sparring partner that didn't practically strangle me when we had the lessons.... -__-'

Wow this is an old thread. Been doing MMA for a few years now haha. Been down to the Wolfslair for BJJ a few times to sharpen up when I can, the best fight gym in the country.
I may start going regularly and go to some proper boxing classes again too once I get in shape again as I have let myself go haha.
